Madison, Dec 23, (V7N) - The community gathered at City Church in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday to mourn the loss of 14-year-old Rubi Patricia Vergara, who was tragically killed in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School on December 16. Vergara, a freshman at the school, was described by family and friends as a "gentle spirit" with a love for music, art, and books.
The service, attended by family, friends, and a live-streamed audience of more than 100 people, began with a slow guitar and a song that ended with the words, “You are God with us.” During the service, Vergara’s family spoke of her quiet nature, her deep care for others, and her many talents. Vergara was known for playing the piano and singing in the family worship band, as well as her love for reading, particularly Christian fantasy fiction. Her uncle, Andy Remus, shared that the family holds "no bitterness or unforgiveness" toward the shooter, Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow, adding that they have faith in God to help them through the loss.
Pastor Tom Flaherty of City Church spoke of Vergara’s character, describing her as an introvert who enjoyed deep-dish pizza and loved animals. He noted her "amazing harmony" in music and how she cared deeply for others. "She was a quiet, gentle spirit," he said.
Vergara’s death was part of a tragic school shooting incident in which Rupnow, a 15-year-old student at the school, opened fire during a study hall. Authorities report that Rupnow killed Vergara and Erin M. West, a 42-year-old substitute teacher coordinator at the school. Rupnow later died from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound while en route to the hospital.
Police are still investigating the motives behind the shooting. It is not yet clear if Rupnow was targeting specific individuals. They are also investigating how she obtained the firearms used in the attack. Authorities revealed that Rupnow was in contact with a man in California, who allegedly planned a coordinated attack with the school shooting, targeting a government building.
While the investigation continues, the community is left to process the devastating loss of two lives and the trauma caused by the shooting. Vergara's family remains focused on healing and leaning on their faith as they cope with this tragedy.
