Beirut, Dec 23 (V7N) — Ahmed al-Sara Jolani, the leader of the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has assured Lebanon of non-interference in its internal affairs, pledging to respect the country’s sovereignty. This commitment was made during a meeting with prominent Druze community leaders Walid and Timur Jumblatt on Sunday.

According to a report by Middle East Eye, Jolani stated that Syria, under his leadership, would refrain from any negative involvement in Lebanon and would respect the unity, independence, security, and stability of its southern neighbour.

Jolani’s remarks come amidst significant regional shifts following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad earlier this month. Assad, a member of the Shia Muslim Alawite sect, had ruled Syria for decades, with Alawites occupying many senior positions in the government. His fall has raised concerns among Alawite communities, who fear retaliation from Sunni armed groups.

However, Jolani has sought to allay such fears, stating that minority communities, including the Alawites, would not face persecution under the new administration. "We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Syrians, regardless of their background," he declared after assuming power.

Syria and Lebanon share a complex history, with Syrian forces occupying parts of northern Lebanon between 1976 and 2005. Jolani’s commitment to non-interference is seen as a significant move to rebuild trust and stability in the region.

Observers note that the meeting with the Jumblatt family, influential figures in Lebanon’s Druze community, underscores Jolani’s intent to foster regional stability and cooperation.
