Washungton, D.C., Jan 17, (V7N) - In his farewell address on Wednesday night, President Joe Biden reflected on his time in office and issued a warning about threats to American democracy. Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden called serving as president "the highest honor of my life" but stressed that dangers ahead, particularly from misinformation and powerful tech industries, pose significant risks to the country.
Biden's remarks, made just days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, highlighted key moments from his presidency, both domestically and internationally. Biden noted that Ukraine remains free despite the ongoing Russian invasion, NATO has been strengthened, and his administration has made strides in improving the American economy after the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the country has created 17 million jobs and worked toward rebuilding critical infrastructure, expanding access to high-speed internet, and lowering prescription drug costs for seniors.
Biden also celebrated his administration's efforts in modernizing American infrastructure, revitalizing semiconductor supply chains, and passing the most significant gun-safety law in three decades. He expressed optimism for the future, saying, “The seeds are planted. And they’ll grow and bloom for decades to come.”
However, Biden warned of growing threats to democracy, citing the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few individuals and the spread of misinformation that undermines free press and individual rights. He emphasized the need for stronger regulation of social media platforms and artificial intelligence to protect privacy and safeguard democracy.
Though he did not mention Trump by name, Biden called for the passage of a constitutional amendment to ensure no president is above the law. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that presidents cannot be prosecuted for actions taken while in office. Biden stressed that the president's power should not be unlimited.
In his final words, Biden urged Americans to stand guard over the nation’s ideals, expressing his belief in the strength of American institutions and the character of its people. “May you all be the keeper of the flame,” he said. Biden concluded with a message of love for America, saying, "I love America. You love it, too. Thank you for this great honor."
