In a devastating attack that shocked the world, gunmen stormed a concert hall in the Russian capital Moscow, leaving a trail of death and destruction. The death toll has risen to 93, with more than 140 people injured, according to the FSB Federal Security Service. Authorities fear the casualty count may climb even higher.
Russian security forces have arrested eleven individuals in connection with the attack, with four suspects believed to have been directly involved in the heinous act. Despite the gravity of the situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to address the public directly about the incident, though he conveyed wishes for the swift recovery of the injured through a deputy.
The attack comes in the wake of a warning issued by the US Embassy in Moscow earlier this month, cautioning about potential threats from extremist groups targeting large gatherings, including concerts, in the city. However, Russian officials seemingly downplayed the warning.
Reacting to the tragedy, Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia and current deputy head of the Russian Security Council, vowed retaliation for the ruthless assault. In a stern message conveyed via social media platform Telegram, Medvedev emphasized that terrorists only understand the language of force, stressing the necessity of swift and decisive action against them and their associates.
The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, as reported by Reuters. The terror group made the assertion via its Telegram channel following the horrific incident, further heightening concerns about global security in the face of such ruthless acts of violence.
