Islamabad, Feb 27 (V7N) – Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has declared what he described as an “open war” with Afghanistan, accusing the Afghan authorities of sponsoring terrorism.
In a lengthy interview amid escalating counter-attacks between the two neighbors, Asif alleged that the Taliban government supports militant activities and backs proxy groups operating against Pakistan. He said Islamabad is fully aware of the situation given Afghanistan’s status as a neighboring country.
According to reports, tensions intensified after Pakistan launched strikes last Sunday in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province and Paktika Province, claiming more than 80 armed fighters were killed. Afghan authorities, however, said 18 people lost their lives in the attacks.
In response, Afghan forces reportedly carried out retaliatory operations along border areas, claiming 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed, while Islamabad acknowledged the deaths of two personnel.
Pakistan later conducted airstrikes targeting several locations, including Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarhar and Paktia, asserting that 133 Taliban fighters were killed. Afghan officials, on the other hand, claimed a Pakistani military aircraft was shot down during the confrontation.
The latest escalation marks one of the most serious spikes in hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent years, raising fears of broader regional instability.
