In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East following a series of Iranian drone and missile strikes on Israeli territory, Russia has deployed warships to the Mediterranean Sea.
On Sunday (April 14), Al Jazeera reported that the Russian frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov entered the Mediterranean via Egypt's Suez Canal. Equipped with Kinzhal supersonic missiles, the frigate's deployment marks a significant escalation in the region's military dynamics.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the frigate's entry into the Mediterranean, stating that it is part of planned naval exercises. Details regarding the specific tasks assigned to the Marshal Shaposhnikov were not disclosed.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have intensified since April 1 when Israel launched a missile attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, resulting in the deaths of seven high-ranking officials, including two Revolutionary Guard commanders.
In response to the attack, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles targeting Israeli territory, prompting condemnation from Western nations, including the UK and Germany. The United States and France have pledged support to Israel's defense efforts, with US President Joe Biden reaffirming Washington's commitment to Israel's security.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's spokesperson condemned Iran's actions, warning of the heightened risk of regional conflict. Germany reiterated its solidarity with Israel and urged Iran to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
Iran, in turn, issued warnings against third-party involvement in support of Israel's countermeasures, threatening to target US bases if Washington backs Israeli military action. China expressed concern over the escalating conflict, urging all parties to exercise calm and patience.
In a statement, China's Foreign Ministry emphasized the urgency of implementing the UN Security Council resolution adopted on March 25, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The ministry called on influential nations to play a peaceful and constructive role in resolving the crisis and bringing an end to the conflict.
