According to local authorities on Sunday, a recent storm that caused landslides and floods in Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil, claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals.

The northern part of the city was impacted by the storm that hit early on Sunday, along with other towns including Niteroi, Duque de Caxias, Belford Roxo, and Sao Jose de Meriti.

According to the fire brigade, hundreds of people had to leave their homes because of the flooding.

In order to provide emergency resources and care for those impacted by the flooding, the city's mayor, Eduardo Paes, issued a "state of emergency".
