In a devastating incident early Friday morning, at least 20 people lost their lives and 21 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus overturned on the Karakoram Highway in the Diamar district of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The tragedy unfolded around 5:30 AM local time, as reported by Pakistani media outlet The Dawn.

According to rescue officials, the ill-fated bus, operated by a private company, was en route from Rawalpindi to Gilgit when the driver lost control near Gunar Farm along the Karakoram Highway. The bus veered off course, eventually overturning and landing on the banks of the Indus River.

Initially, rescue workers counted 35 individuals injured in the accident. However, the toll rose tragically as many succumbed to their injuries in the aftermath of the crash.

Faizullah Faraq, spokesman for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, confirmed that among the deceased were three women, adding a poignant layer to the already devastating loss of life.

Expressing his sorrow over the incident, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
