In a bold move against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, Spain has taken a firm stance by refusing entry to a ship carrying weapons destined for Israel. The Spanish government announced on Thursday that no further shipments of arms for Israel would be permitted to enter Spanish ports.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez affirmed this decision during a press briefing in Brussels, stating, "This is the first time we have taken such action because it is the first instance where we have identified a ship carrying arms intended for Israel seeking to dock at a Spanish port."

The ship in question, the Marian Danica, had requested permission to anchor at the port of Cartagena in southeastern Spain on May 21, as confirmed by Transport Minister Oscar Puente. However, the Spanish government has made it clear that it will adopt the same policy for any future shipments of weapons destined for Israel seeking entry into Spanish ports.

Albares emphasized that Spain's Foreign Ministry will systematically reject such requests, citing the need for peace in the Middle East rather than further proliferation of arms.

This move by Spain comes on the heels of its recent decision, along with three other European countries, to recognize Palestine as an independent state. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez previously announced Spain's intention to recognize Palestine by July of this year, underscoring the country's commitment to supporting Palestinian rights.

Additionally, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, the city of Barcelona severed its relations with Israel in November of last year in response to the ongoing occupation and indiscriminate violence in the Gaza Strip.

While Spain's actions have been welcomed by Gaza's Hamas, Israel and its Western allies have expressed discontent over the refusal to allow the shipment of weapons into Spanish ports. The move highlights the growing international pressure on Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work towards a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict.
