Iran has set the date for its presidential elections following the death of President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The elections will be held on June 28, as reported by Turkish news media Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, May 21.

According to Anadolu Agency, citing Iran's state-run news agency IRNA, the announcement came after a meeting between the heads of the judiciary, executive, and legislative authorities. The registration of candidates for the country's 14th presidential election will commence on May 30.

On Sunday, May 19, the helicopter carrying President Ibrahim Raisi crashed in the Jolfa area, near the border with Azerbaijan. Alongside President Raisi, the helicopter was carrying the country's foreign minister and the governor of East Azerbaijan. They were returning from the inauguration of a reservoir project in Azerbaijan.

President Raisi's funeral is scheduled to be held today, Tuesday, May 21, in Tabriz.

Following the tragic accident, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. Raisi's death has prompted expressions of sorrow and solidarity from leaders and groups within Iran and from regional allies.

The upcoming presidential election is expected to be a significant event, with the country preparing to select a new leader to navigate the complex political landscape left by Raisi's untimely death.
