Mogadishu, 15 July– At least nine people were killed and 20 others injured in a devastating car bomb attack by the militant group al-Shabaab near Somalia's presidential building on Sunday, July 14. The incident, which took place in the capital city of Mogadishu, has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the high-security zone.
According to reports from Al Jazeera, the militants targeted a popular restaurant where many people had gathered to watch the Euro final. The explosion caused significant damage to the restaurant and nearby structures, and at least ten vehicles were also destroyed in the blast.
The attack occurred despite the presence of tight security around the presidential building, which has led to questions about how such a breach could happen in one of the most heavily guarded areas of the city.
Local authorities have confirmed that the bomb-laden vehicle exploded in close proximity to the restaurant, causing a part of the establishment to collapse. Emergency responders and security personnel rushed to the scene to provide aid and secure the area.
"The militants took advantage of the gathering to inflict maximum casualties," said a security official who requested anonymity. "The attack was clearly intended to cause widespread panic and destruction."
Somalia has been plagued by violence and instability for years, with al-Shabaab frequently carrying out attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of the country. The group aims to overthrow the Somali government and establish a strict Islamic state.
This latest attack underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by Somali authorities as they attempt to restore peace and stability in the nation. The government has vowed to intensify its efforts to combat al-Shabaab and prevent future attacks.
International leaders have condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with Somalia in its fight against terrorism. The Somali government has called for increased cooperation and support from the international community to address the threat posed by al-Shabaab.
As investigations continue, the Somali people mourn the loss of innocent lives and brace themselves for the long road ahead in the battle against extremism and violence.
