Pentagon, Aug 03 (V7N) - In a significant move amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the Pentagon has announced the deployment of a fighter jet squadron to the region and the continued presence of an aircraft carrier. This decision comes in the wake of President Joe Biden's expressed concerns over the potential for escalating violence in the area.
 
Biden, speaking on Friday, emphasized his apprehensions following the recent killing of a senior Hamas leader in Iran. He indicated that the death of this key figure has complicated efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Biden had previously engaged in a “very direct” discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging immediate action towards a cease-fire. “We have the basis for a cease-fire. He should move on it and they should move on it now,” Biden asserted.
 
Netanyahu, however, has stated Israel's commitment to achieving “total victory” over Hamas. Despite expressing hope for a cease-fire, he remains resolute in the pursuit of this objective. The recent targeted assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut have heightened fears of a broader regional conflict. Iran has vowed retaliation following these attacks, intensifying the already volatile situation.
 
Internationally, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has joined the chorus of voices advocating for a cease-fire, stressing that it is crucial for breaking the cycle of violence and alleviating the ongoing suffering in the region.
