New Delhi, August 15 – Widespread protests and demonstrations have erupted across India following the tragic rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice, with people from various walks of life, including doctors, students, and celebrities, participating in rallies across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Independence Day, urging state governments to take stronger measures against violence targeting women. Speaking in Delhi, Modi acknowledged the public's anger over the incident and stressed the importance of swift investigations. "There is anger in the public mind over the incidents of atrocities against mothers and sisters," Modi said, calling for state governments to prioritize these cases and ensure that those responsible face the strictest punishment.

The incident occurred early last Friday when the body of a female doctor was discovered on the fourth floor of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital. Allegedly, the doctor was raped and then murdered after completing her shift. The discovery has led to protests in Kolkata and other major cities, with citizens demanding justice.

Protests began late on Wednesday night, coinciding with India's Independence Day, and have since spread to several cities. In Kolkata, thousands of protesters took to the streets, and some entered RG Kar Hospital to express their demands for justice. The "Occupy the Night" movement saw participation from people of various professions, including women who remained on the streets late into the night.

Prominent figures from the Tollywood film industry also joined the protests, including stars like Ditipriya Roy, Ritabrata Mukhopadhyay, Srima Bhattacharya, Trina Saha, and others. Bollywood celebrities, such as Ayushmann Khurrana and Alia Bhatt, have also shown their support, participating in demonstrations and calling for justice.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured that the state government will fully cooperate with the central government's investigation into the incident. She also expressed concern over what she described as attempts by political rivals to exploit the situation for political gain.

The protests, which have included candlelight vigils and peaceful marches, reflect a national call for action against violence targeting women and a demand for justice in this tragic case.
