New York, Sep 24 (V7N)- The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, arrived in New York on Monday night to attend the session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:16 p.m. local time (8:16 a.m. Bangladesh time), and he headed straight to the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan.
Earlier, Dr. Yunus and his delegation, including 57 individuals consisting of security personnel and media representatives, departed Dhaka on a Qatar Airways flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. This marks Dr. Yunus’s first foreign visit as Chief Adviser.
During his visit, Dr. Yunus is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with leaders and officials from the Netherlands, Pakistan, Nepal, the European Commission, and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. However, no bilateral discussion is expected with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On 27 September, Dr. Yunus will deliver an important speech at the UNGA, where he will address Bangladesh’s stance on key global issues, including the Rohingya crisis. In addition to urging international support on this matter, he will touch on topics such as Bangladesh’s role in international peacekeeping, climate justice, global conflicts, the challenges developing nations face in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the rights and safety of migrants.
His speech will also focus on the recent popular uprising in Bangladesh, emphasising the need to build a welfare-oriented, people-centred state.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the UNGA session, Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain met with India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to discuss matters of mutual interest. Hossain confirmed that Dr. Yunus’s visit has drawn attention from numerous global media outlets and prominent officials, with many requesting interviews and bilateral meetings.
Despite the tight schedule of the three-day trip, Dr. Yunus’s participation in the UNGA is expected to be a highlight of his tenure, reflecting Bangladesh’s efforts to address international issues and assert its stance on the global stage.
