In response to forecasts of heavy rainfall in the Haor area, the Department of Agriculture Extension has issued a special advisory to farmers, urging them to take precautionary measures to protect their crops.

The Meteorological Department's predictions indicate the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several areas of the North Eastern Haor region, including Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, and Netrakona, starting from May 3.

To mitigate the potential adverse effects of heavy rainfall on crops, farmers are advised to implement the following recommendations:

Timely Harvesting: Harvest boro paddy at 80 percent maturity and store it promptly in a safe and dry location.

Vegetable Harvesting: Prioritize the harvest of vegetables that ripen quickly to prevent damage.

Drainage Maintenance: Keep drainage channels clean to prevent waterlogging in paddy fields.

Elevation of Land: Raise land aisles to minimize water accumulation.

Water Management: Arrange for the drainage of excess water from croplands to avoid waterlogging.

Suspension of Irrigation: Refrain from irrigation, fertilizer application, and pesticide use during periods of heavy rainfall.

Herbicide Application: Apply herbicides after rainfall to maximize effectiveness.

Support for Horticultural Crops: Provide support such as poles for bananas and other horticultural crops and vegetables to prevent damage from strong winds and heavy rainfall.

These precautionary measures aim to equip farmers with strategies to safeguard their crops and minimize potential losses. By following these guidelines, farmers in the Haor area can better prepare for and mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions on their agricultural activities.
