Izmir, June 30 (V7N) — A fierce wildfire has broken out in Turkey’s western Izmir province, forcing evacuations and disrupting air traffic. The fire ignited on Sunday (June 29) in a forested area along the coast and rapidly spread due to strong winds.
Officials said wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour helped push the flames toward the popular tourist city of Menderes, leading to the temporary closure of Izmir International Airport.
Authorities evacuated residents from six areas near the affected forest zones as a precaution. More than 1,000 fire service personnel are battling the blaze, supported by 11 firefighting planes and 27 helicopters that are spraying chemicals to contain the fire.
Local officials have expressed concern about the potential for extensive damage, given the fire’s speed and intensity. Efforts to bring the blaze under control are ongoing, with teams working around the clock.
