Dhaka, Oct 11 (V7N)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh has officially protested the killing of a Bangladeshi fisherman by the Myanmar Navy near Saint Martin , Teknaf, Cox's Bazar. A formal letter was sent to the Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka today, expressing strong disapproval of the incident.
The fisherman, Osman Gani (60), a resident of Konapara, Shah Parir Island , Teknaf, was shot and killed on Wednesday while fishing near Saint Martin Union with a group of other fishermen.
According to the protest letter, a total of 58 Bangladeshi fishermen aboard six fishing boats were captured by the Myanmar Navy while fishing in the waters near Saint Martin Island . Following negotiations between the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Myanmar Navy , the captured fishermen, along with their boats, were released in two phases.
The Government of Bangladesh has called upon Myanmar to prevent such incidents from recurring, emphasizing the need to respect Bangladesh’s territorial integrity and avoid provocative actions. The diplomatic note highlighted the expectation that Myanmar will fully comply with international norms.
The incident occurred on October 9 in the Moulvir Shil area, an estuary in the Bay of Bengal southwest of Saint Martin. During the Myanmar Navy's operation, Osman Gani was fatally shot when contact was first made with the Bangladesh Coast Guard . After his death, a trawler carrying 11 fishermen, including Gani, was released. The remaining fishermen and their boats were freed in a subsequent round.
The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of Bangladeshi fishermen near the country's border waters.
