Dhaka, August 13 (V7N) — Renowned educationist and former DUCSU Vice President Professor Mahfuza Khanam has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and pioneering leadership.

Professor Khanam graduated with a degree in Physics from the University of Dhaka in 1966 and completed her Master’s in the same department the following year. Her journey was marked by determination and brilliance at a time when societal norms posed significant challenges for women in higher education and leadership.

During her student years, she broke barriers by entering student politics, earning the nomination of the East Pakistan Students Union. In 1966–67, she became the female Vice President of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), setting a historic precedent for women’s political participation in Bangladesh.

In recognition of her contributions, Professor Mahfuza Khanam was honored with a state tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar following her passing — a testament to her lifelong dedication to education, equity, and public service.

She is remembered not only as an academic but also as a symbol of courage and inspiration for generations of women striving for leadership and change.
