Dhaka, Dec 08 (V7N)— Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that foreigners residing illegally in Bangladesh will not be permitted to remain in the country. He made this declaration while addressing reporters following a meeting on law and order regarding Christmas and New Year celebrations on Sunday.

Without specifying any country, he revealed that authorities are aware of numerous foreign nationals staying unlawfully in Bangladesh. However, he admitted the absence of exact data on the number of such individuals.

Discussing preparations for Christmas on December 25 and Thirty-First Night on December 31, the advisor emphasised ensuring a secure environment for celebrations.

“All bars will be closed on the 31st night. Lanterns and fireworks are discouraged. Although there are no current threats, law enforcement agencies remain vigilant,” he said.

He reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal border infiltration, stating, “No illegal entry will be tolerated at the border. The BGB is on full alert.”

Addressing regional matters, the advisor mentioned ongoing discussions with India through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “A secretary-level Indian official will visit on Monday, and various issues will be discussed. Relations with India are expected to improve, with no indication of any negative developments,” he assured.

The advisor also highlighted the media’s role in countering misinformation, particularly in response to what he called “the lies of the Indian media.”

Bangladesh's government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order during the festive season while addressing border and diplomatic concerns proactively.
