Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N)— Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah has stated that holding local government elections simultaneously with the national parliamentary elections is not feasible. "Our main focus is the national elections," he said during a press briefing following a commission meeting at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Sunday.

The commissioner dismissed suggestions for conducting both elections together, describing them as unrealistic. "Some have argued in favour of holding all elections together. This is not a realistic proposal. It is not possible to hold national elections and local elections simultaneously," he clarified.

On the matter of local government elections, he mentioned that the Election Commission (EC) would conduct them if instructed by the Ministry of Local Government. "It will depend on the government's decision," he added.

Addressing the issue of the National Identity Card (NID) service, which has been moved under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the commissioner expressed concerns about constitutional conflicts. "We feel that the National Identity Card Service being taken under the Ministry of Home Affairs is in conflict with the constitution. We have decided to exchange letters on this issue," he said.

The commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a smooth and credible national election, with all efforts directed towards that objective.
