Dhaka, Mar 21 (V7N) -A group of Dhaka University students held a protest march early on Friday, demanding a ban on the Awami League and the withdrawal of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus’s statement on not having any plans to ban the party.
The march started in the Hallpara area of DU at around 1:45am and ended at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, with the burning of an effigy of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a speech.
The protesters also announced a gathering later in the day, at 3pm, at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, pressing home their demand for the Awami League’s banning and justice for mass killings during the July uprising.
One of the protesters, AB Zubair, said the chief adviser wanted to ban the Awami League but was “unable” to, due to people around him. He blamed various political parties, agencies and quarters for Yunus not being able to ban Hasina’s party.
Zubair urged Yunus to withdraw his statement, saying students and the masses would stand by him.
"There will not be any election in this land until the Awami League is banned or trial for the mass killings takes place."
Another protester, Musaddiq Ibne Ali, condemned top political party leaders for not wanting the Awami League's ban. "We think you are trying to give the Awami League space, thinking of political gain."
He warned that students and the public masses would take a strong position against the chief adviser if he did not withdraw or explain his statement.
Later, he announced their next program and asked students from all over the country to hold protests in front of their respective institutions demanding the Awami League's ban and justice for the July mass killings.
