Dhaka, June 2 (V7N) — Bangladesh witnessed a historic surge in remittance inflows in May 2025, as expatriate workers sent home a record-breaking $2.97 billion. This marks the highest remittance total for the current fiscal year and comes just ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festivities.
At the current exchange rate of Tk 122 per dollar, the total remittance for May amounts to Tk 36,234 crore. On average, this translates to $95.8 million or Tk 1,169 crore per day.
This figure surpasses April’s remittance total by $220 million, making April the second highest month on record. However, the all-time monthly remittance record still belongs to March 2025, when inflows reached $3.29 billion.
Officials from the Bangladesh Bank attribute the spike to seasonal factors, particularly Eid-ul-Azha. During this period, expatriates typically send additional funds to support their families with expenses related to purchasing sacrificial animals, new clothing, gifts, and other festival-related costs.
From July 2024 to May 2025, total remittance inflows reached $27.5 billion — a significant 28.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. This growth highlights the crucial role of expatriate earnings in bolstering the country's foreign exchange reserves and overall economic stability.
