Following a devastating fire that ravaged Bangabazar, one of Dhaka's largest wholesale cloth hubs, critical questions about trader safety and accountability have emerged. The blaze, which engulfed 5,000 shops across four markets last April, left thousands of traders reeling from shattered dreams and employees grappling with loss of livelihoods.
Renewal Efforts Unveiled: "Bangabazar Paikari Nagar Bipanibitan" Project
In a bid to revitalize the scorched grounds of Bangabazar, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has embarked on an ambitious plan to construct a 10-storey multi-storied market. Named the "Bangabazar Paikari Nagar Bipanibitan" project, this initiative will encompass 106 katha of land and entail construction costs totaling Tk365 crores, to be funded by shop owners.
Prospects for Reconstruction: Spacious Shops and Modern Amenities
The rejuvenated Bangabazar market is set to feature 3,215 spacious shops, offering larger spaces ranging from 80 to 120 square feet, in contrast to the previous 17 to 24 square feet. Equipped with modern market amenities and a robust fire-fighting system, the new complex aims to ensure enhanced safety and convenience for traders and customers alike.
While the reconstruction efforts aim to prioritize traders affected by the fire, concerns linger regarding potential exclusion from the allocation process and the financial burden of deposit requirements. Traders must deposit a minimum of Tk20 lakhs for shop allotment, raising apprehensions among those grappling with the aftermath of the fire.
Calls for Expedited Action: Shop Owners Association Urges Prompt Completion
Addressing these concerns, Zahirul Islam, General Secretary of the Bangabazar Complex Shop Owners Association, emphasized the need for expedited project completion. He stressed the importance of equitable treatment for all affected parties and urged authorities to fulfill promises of prioritized allocation for fire-affected traders.
As the reconstruction of Bangabazar unfolds, stakeholders await further developments, hoping for a swift and inclusive recovery process that ensures the resilience and prosperity of this vital commercial hub.
