Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud expressed concerns on Monday, stating that Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) must not be allowed to evolve into a “hub of militancy” under the guise of depoliticisation.

Addressing a discussion commemorating the 56th anniversary of the Bangladesh Film Journalists’ Association, Hasan Mahmud, also the Awami League Joint General Secretary, emphasized the importance of preserving the institution's political legacy.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and actor Ferdous Ahmed MP were among the special guests at the event.

Hasan Mahmud noted that while student politics has always been part of Buet's culture, recent events have raised concerns. He criticized certain groups for attempting to depoliticize the campus and highlighted the need to investigate the presence of banned militant organizations within the university.

Referring to a recent incident where a Buet student was expelled for involvement in off-campus politics, Hasan Mahmud questioned the decision's rationale and its implications.

Expressing respect for genuine student movements, Hasan Mahmud underscored the necessity of preventing Buet from becoming a breeding ground for militancy. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the institution's reputation and ensuring that it remains free from extremist influences.

The foreign minister also emphasized the significance of cultural practices in shaping the university's environment.

Raju Alim, Minister (Press) of Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, Shaban Mahmud, President of BFUJ, Omar Farooq, Convener of Editors' Forum, and Rafiqul Islam Ratan and Rimon Mahfuz, among others, attended the event.
