Helicopters from the Air Force have never before assisted with afternoon fire suppression in the Sundarbans. Additionally, water was thrown into the fire zones by helicopters. Prior to this, the creepers were burnt to the ground along with minor plants from other locations inside this designated woodland that covered around ten acres.
The fire was brought under control after 33 hours in Latif's Shila area adjacent to Amrbunia patrol post in Chandpai range of Sundarban, Bagerhat. Mongla station officer of Fire Service confirmed that the fire was brought under control at 8 pm on Sunday (May 5). Kaymuzzaman.
This official said that even if the fire in Sundarbans is under control, it will be kept under observation till Monday evening. If you see the washing coil, it will be soaked with water quickly. Before this, on the second day of the fire, on Sunday morning, officials of four offices of Sundarbans division and forest guards, members of 5 stations of Bagerhat, Morelganj, Mongla, Sharankhola, Kachua, Navy, Coast Guard, Police, Tourist Police and local members of Sundarbans protection team simultaneously worked to control the fire.
This is the first time that Air Force helicopters joined the Sundarban fire control in the afternoon. Water was also dropped from helicopters to the fire areas. Before this, the creepers along with small plants of about 10 acres of different places of this reserved forest were burnt to ashes. In the last 20 years, 86 acres of forest have been burnt to ashes in 26 fires in the Sundarbans. No wildlife casualties were reported during the day.
