The High Court has directed relevant authorities to compile and submit a report detailing the number of legal and illegal foreign workers in Bangladesh. The order, which tasks the Inspector General of Police with its execution, was issued by a High Court bench consisting of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon after a writ petition was heard.
Representing the writ petitioner was Barrister Sarwar Hossain, while Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy, Assistant Attorney General Selim Azad, and Anis Ul Mawa represented the state.
At a press conference at the National Press Club on February 14, it was disclosed that over 1 million illegal foreign workers are employed in various sectors across Bangladesh. This situation, as presented by the organization "Oboidho Bideshi Khedao Andolon," is depriving Bangladeshi citizens of job opportunities suitable for their qualifications.
Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, the general secretary of the organization and a Supreme Court lawyer, emphasized that it is a constitutional right for citizens to be appointed according to their merit. He highlighted that unemployment in Bangladesh has reached a critical level over the past decade and a half, with the current unemployment rate standing at 12%, the highest ever recorded.
