SYLHET, March 26, (V7N) — On the occasion of Independence and National Day, Sylhet City Corporation (CCIC) Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury paid tribute to the memory of the brave martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar at 6:01 am Thursday, accompanied by CCIC officers and employees.

Speaking to the media, Chowdhury said the nation is celebrating Independence and National Day in a new spirit, recalling the long struggle for democracy and the sacrifices of countless people who faced torture, oppression, and death. He noted that even the opportunity to pay homage at the Shaheed Minar was often obstructed in the past.

Reflecting on the history of independence, he said that following the failure of political leadership after the 1970 elections, genocide was carried out on March 25, 1971. In that critical moment, BNP founder and martyr President Ziaur Rahman declared the War of Liberation and united the nation.

Chowdhury emphasized that Ziaur Rahman not only made declarations but also directly led the war from the front lines. He highlighted Zia’s role in the Sylhet region, from Zakiganj‑Kanaighat to MC College, culminating in the liberation of Sylhet on December 15, 1971.

The administrator underscored that Ziaur Rahman’s leadership in Sylhet remains an important example of his contribution to the Liberation War.

CCIC Secretary Md. Ashiq Noor, Chief Revenue Officer Biswajit Deb, Acting Chief Engineer Md. Ali Akbar, Chief Health Officer Dr. Md. Zahidul Islam and other officials were present during the tribute.
