Pabna, Aug 24 (V7N) - A critical component known as the "Transport Lock" for Unit-2 of the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant has arrived at the construction site in Pabna. This equipment is integral to the unit's fuel handling system, and its installation in the reactor building will begin shortly.

Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear energy agency, announced this development in a press release on Saturday, August 24.

The Transport Lock is a cylindrical piece of equipment, weighing 235 tons, with a length of 12.7 meters and a diameter of 10 meters. Its main functions include preventing the release of radioactive materials from the containment area and providing fire protection. During plant operations, the equipment will be essential for transporting materials for reactor maintenance, as well as for loading new fuel and unloading spent fuel.

Alexei Deyri, Vice President (Bangladesh Projects) at Atomstroyexport, commented, “The progress of the Ruppur NPP project, including the supply and installation of equipment, startup, and adjustments, is proceeding as planned. We can assure that Rosatom is fulfilling its commitments to Bangladesh and ensuring the reliability and safety of our technology for the benefit of the nation's people and future generations.”

The Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant, supported by Russian financial and technical aid, is being built as Bangladesh's first nuclear facility. The plant will have a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts with two units. The first unit is nearing readiness for startup. The plant will utilize the advanced Russian 3+ generation VVER 1200 reactors, which meet all international safety standards. The facility is designed to operate for 60 years, with the potential for a 20-year extension if necessary. It will play a crucial role in providing a stable and high-quality electricity supply and maintaining base load. The project is being managed by Rosatom’s engineering division.
