Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N): Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum has reported that more than 1,000 people lost their lives during recent student protests, with over 400 cases of blindness resulting from the unrest, many losing sight in one or both eyes.

She shared this information while visiting the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health later confirmed these details in a press release issued on Thursday.

"We have been in contact with the Seva Foundation in America. For those who have lost their sight or are facing eye problems, we've sent their details to the foundation. They have assured us that doctors will be dispatched as soon as possible to provide treatment," said the health adviser.

She mentioned that the affected individuals would receive treatment at the Isphahani Islamia Eye Institute, the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital, Chittagong Eye Hospital, and Dinajpur.

During her visit, Nurjahan Begum also met with injured police officers in the surgery department to assess their conditions. She discussed the provision of medical services with the hospital authorities and doctors.

Addressing journalists, she stated, "Many injured police officers are currently receiving treatment, with some having sustained injuries to their legs and heads. An injured student coordinator is also under care."

"The government has committed to taking responsibility for the families of those who have died and to providing free treatment for the injured," she added.

She further noted, "Some individuals have suffered severe leg injuries, leading to amputations. We are in discussions with various donor organizations and the World Bank to bring in a team of doctors from abroad for appropriate treatment. Efforts are ongoing in this regard."
