Dhaka, Sep 14 (V7N) – Professor MA Faiz, Chairman of the Expert Panel on Health Sector Reforms, has officially resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation letter to the Health Secretary on Friday afternoon, citing personal reasons for his inability to continue in the role. Professor Faiz confirmed his resignation to the media.

"I resigned for personal reasons. It is not possible for me to perform my duties," Faiz stated, adding that he had managed to conduct only one meeting since assuming the role.

The Ministry of Health had established the expert panel on August 3, 2024, with the goal of initiating necessary reforms in the country’s health system, improving the quality of medical services, and strengthening the overall structure. Professor Faiz, a former Director General of the Health Department, was appointed as the head of the 11-member panel.

However, the formation of the panel drew criticism from various sectors. Critics pointed out that the committee was composed exclusively of expert doctors, excluding public health experts, nutritionists, and population specialists. The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a BNP-affiliated doctors' group, rejected the panel outright during a press conference, amplifying the controversy surrounding the committee's composition.

The resignation of Professor Faiz now raises questions about the future of the panel and the progress of health sector reforms in the country.
