Dhaka, Oct 17 (V7N)– The market prices of eggs have seen a slight decrease following strong warnings from consumer rights authorities. However, eggs are still not being sold at the government-fixed prices, as observed during market visits across the capital on Thursday.

Currently, farm chicken eggs are priced at 150 taka per dozen, while white eggs have dropped to 147 taka per dozen. The government had set a retail price of 118.7 taka for a dozen eggs, indicating a significant markup in the market.

Retail prices for eggs are reported to range between 165 to 170 taka per dozen, leaving consumers feeling the pinch. Although producers have committed to supplying 2 million eggs to the capital's wholesale markets, this amount covers only 2% of the total consumer demand.

Sellers in the market attribute the chaos to large companies controlling the supply chain and have called for stricter oversight. Wholesalers claim that the retail prices have risen due to purchasing costs, which are around 1.5 taka higher per egg.

Retail traders echo these sentiments, stating that the anarchy in the egg market is primarily a result of actions taken by large companies at the production level.

Consumers have voiced their concerns, asserting that merely fixing prices is insufficient. They urge the government to implement strict monitoring measures to ensure compliance with the mandated pricing regulations.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders from producers to retailers and consumers continue to advocate for solutions to stabilize the egg market and provide relief to buyers.
