Mongla, June 29 (V7N) - Local traders and laborers in Mongla formed a human chain on Sunday in protest against the complete shutdown of Mongla Customs House, which they claim is disrupting trade and causing significant economic hardship. The demonstration took place at 12:30 PM in front of the municipal market premises.
Several business and labor leaders addressed the gathering, including Mohammad Nasir Talukder, an EPZ businessman, Mahbubur Rahman Manik, a port-based trader, Emran Hossain, and labor leader Mohammad Alauddin.
Speaking at the protest, the participants condemned the customs shutdown and the so-called “March to NBR” strike, which they allege is an organized movement to hinder national revenue collection. “We categorically reject any activity that obstructs revenue operations. This complete shutdown is unjustified and harmful to the national interest,” said one speaker.
They alleged that the ongoing strike and disruption are being carried out by a group of individuals loyal to the ruling Awami League, many of whom were appointed during its tenure. “These individuals are attempting to destabilize the country and tarnish the image of the current interim government,” said another protester.
The speakers also demanded that the authorities take stern action against the protesters, including dismissal from service. “If needed, replace them with educated unemployed youth from the new generation who are eager to serve the country,” they urged.
The demonstrators further warned that if the customs officers do not immediately withdraw their strike, they would escalate their movement. Proposed measures include a siege of the Mongla Customs House, further human chains, and other forms of mass protest.
The protest in Mongla underscores the growing tension between revenue officials and the business community, particularly in port-dependent regions where customs operations are crucial for trade continuity.
