The Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) has called upon the Bangladesh Bank (BB) to guarantee unrestricted entry for reporters into the central bank to facilitate the collection of essential information for reporting purposes. Expressing concern over the sudden imposition of restrictions on journalists' access to the central bank, the ERF emphasized the potential risk of inaccurate reporting on the banking sector due to these limitations. Notably, the ERF highlighted the 53-year history of reporters enjoying free access to BB officials for information collection, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the current restrictions. In response to the new measures, BB Spokesperson Mezbaul Haque announced that journalists would now require specific permits issued by the central bank to visit his office, with similar requirements for visiting other officials within the bank. The ERF has taken proactive steps to address this issue, including a meeting with the central bank governor and the formation of a committee to ensure reporters' easy access to the central bank building, indicating a concerted effort to safeguard the freedom of press and uphold the integrity of banking sector reporting.
