Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun announced that Bangladesh is committed to the sustainable development of its ship-recycling industry in accordance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. This convention, ratified by Bangladesh on June 14, 2023, requires the country to comply with its standards by June 26, 2025, which includes establishing Treatment Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDF) in all shipyards.
The minister emphasized the urgency of implementing necessary measures to align with the convention during a meeting with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco at the Industries Ministry. Humayun also sought the IMO's assistance in securing soft loans from development partners or international financial institutions to help shipyard owners meet the Hong Kong Convention's requirements.
This move is part of Bangladesh's broader efforts to ensure safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practices, aiming for a balance between industrial growth and environmental sustainability. The cooperation with the IMO and the pursuit of financial support are crucial steps towards achieving these goals and maintaining the country's position in the global ship recycling market.
