Natore, Sep 05 (V7N) - In the murder case of student leader Jamyul Alim Jibon, the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal has sentenced former Noldanga Upazila Chairman Asaduzzaman Asad to life imprisonment. However, the tribunal acquitted his two brothers, Faisal Fotik and Alim Al Razi, due to insufficient evidence. The judgment was announced by Judge Mahiduzaman of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal on Thursday afternoon.
Jamyul Alim Jibon, a 22-year-old student leader from Ramshakajipur village in Noldanga Upazila, was the son of Farhad Shah and the nephew of former Upazila Awami League General Secretary SM Firoz.
Asaduzzaman Asad, 52, from the same village, who was also a former chairman of Noldanga Upazila Parishad and an Awami League leader, was sentenced to life imprisonment. His brothers, Faisal Fotik and Alim Al Razi, were acquitted as the evidence was not sufficient to convict them.
According to the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal, the verdict was delivered around 1 PM on Thursday. Judge Mahiduzaman confirmed Asaduzzaman Asad's life sentence, while the other two accused were released.
Jahanara Begum, the complainant and mother of the deceased, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, stating she had hoped for a death sentence for Asaduzzaman Asad. She announced plans to appeal the decision to a higher court.
Court records indicate that on the evening of September 19, 2022, at approximately 7 PM, Asaduzzaman Asad and his two brothers attacked Jamyul Alim Jibon with iron rods and sticks at Amtali Bazaar in Ramshakajipur, Noldanga. Jibon's father, Farhad Hossain, was also assaulted when he intervened. They were initially taken to Natore Sadar Hospital but were later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital due to worsening conditions. Farhad Hossain recovered and returned home, but Jamyul Alim Jibon, who was in a critical state, was admitted to the ICU and was pronounced dead on September 23, 2022.
Jahanara Begum filed a case against Asaduzzaman Asad and his brothers with Noldanga Police Station on September 20, 2022, accusing them of her son’s murder.
