Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N): At least 28 people lost their lives to mob beatings in September, according to a report released by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS). The report also noted that 14 individuals were injured in these incidents.

Despite some progress in specific human rights areas under the interim government, the HRSS report highlighted that the overall situation remains inadequate, with some areas even worsening. The organization further reported that 16 people were killed in 83 cases of political violence during the month. Among these incidents, 45 were linked to internal conflicts within the BNP, while 23 were clashes between BNP and Awami League. Out of those killed, 11 were members of the BNP, and five belonged to the Awami League.

The report also pointed out that eight individuals from the Awami League, BNP, and Jamaat-e-Islami were killed in power struggles and criminal attacks. Additionally, violent clashes over market control in Narsingdi's Palash and Dhaka's Kawran Bazar left 39 people injured.

The HRSS based its findings on reports from national media sources. The report also revealed that nine people were killed in extrajudicial circumstances, including two indigenous community members in an army shooting in Khagrachhari and a garment worker who was shot by police in Ashulia.

Media reports and family testimonies suggest that four individuals died due to torture during joint operations by law enforcement agencies. Among the victims were Sohrab Hossain alias Apple, 35, and Shafiqul Islam, 45, from Gaibandha. Additionally, there was a death reported in the custody of Narayanganj Narcotics Control Department involving a 55-year-old man named Syed Nurul Karim.

The report also highlighted incidents at the border involving India's Border Security Force (BSF), which resulted in the deaths of two minors, a 14-year-old girl named Swarna Das from Moulvibazar and a 15-year-old boy named Sri Jayanta Kumar Sinha from Thakurgaon.

Regarding violence against women, the report mentioned that at least 44 women were raped last month, with 15 of them being minors. Among them, 18 women and girls were gang-raped, four were killed after being raped, and one committed suicide.

"Ensuring the fundamental and constitutional rights of citizens by maintaining law and order is crucial," the report emphasized.
