Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N) —Dr Aminur Rahman, a neurosurgery specialist at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, was abducted on Saturday in a silver-coloured private car from the southern side of the Mawna Chourasta Flyover on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. He was released four hours later after paying a ransom of Tk134,500.

The incident occurred around 7:30pm, and he was freed at approximately 11:30pm in the Salna area of Gazipur Metropolitan City.

The abduction has caused widespread concern in the local area. However, Mawna Highway Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Ayub Ali, claimed he was unaware of the incident even 21 hours after it occurred.

Dr Aminur Rahman, 39, resides with his family in Shanir Akhra, Jatrabari, Dhaka. He is the son of Ismail Hossain from Kochuti village in Kalihati upazila of Tangail. Speaking to this correspondent over the phone on Sunday, he described his ordeal.

Dr Aminur said: “After finishing my first session at Life Care Hospital in Mawna Chourasta, Sreepur, I left the chamber at around 7pm for my home in Dhaka and was waiting for a bus on the southern side of the Maona Chourasta Flyover on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.”

“Around 10 to 12 passengers were also waiting there. Suddenly, a silver-coloured private car stopped nearby. The driver opened the back door and invited us to board for Dhaka. I did not respond,” he added.

He further added: “Out of nowhere, three young men, aged between 18 and 25, pushed me from behind into the car. When I asked if they recognized me, the abductors informed me that I had been kidnapped, explaining that it was part of their line of work.”

“They assured me that no harm would come to me, as long as the ransom was paid. They made it clear that this was how they survived. They blindfolded me with scotch tape and drove me to various locations,” he said.

“Inside the car, they struck my knees with a hammer, punched me in the chest, and even tried to strangle me with a rope, I resisted with my hands,” said the doctor.

He continued: “At first, they demanded Tk500,000 but later reduced the ransom to Tk300,000. They took Tk9,500 in cash from me and used my phone to call my wife. They told my wife to transfer money in various accounts. They took Tk45,000 to my Nagad account, Tk50,000 to my bKash account, and Tk30,000 to their own bKash account.”

“After a long time, fearing they were being followed, they said- ‘This is enough,’ and released me. Four hours later, at around 11:30pm, they dropped me off about a kilometre inside the Salna area of Gazipur Metropolitan City and fled:” Dr Aminur further said.

He also said that the kidnappers took his credit card, two smartphones (with active cash and bKash numbers), and a laptop before releasing him.

Later, he went to a shop on the Salna highway and called home to inform them that he had been released and was on his way back.

On Sunday evening, he said that he would file a written complaint at the Shreepur police station regarding the incident.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shreepur police station, Joynal Abedin Mondol, said: "Upon receiving verbal information, we tracked the location using the mobile number. Later, it was confirmed by the doctor's house that he had returned home.”

He added: “We have not yet received a written complaint. Once we do, legal action will be taken."
