Netrakona, Oct 07 (V7N)— Continuous rainfall and landslides have caused severe flooding in Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Purbadhala, and parts of Sadar in Netrakona, leaving around 30,000 people from 50 villages in 15 unions waterlogged. Torrential water has submerged many regional and rural roads, damaging homes, furniture, and farmland, creating significant hardship for the affected communities.

According to data from the District Water Development Board (PUBO), while water levels in the Someshwari and Kangs rivers have receded at the Durgapur and Jharia points, the Ubdakhali river continues to flow 10 cm above the danger level at the Kalmakanda point. The rise in water levels is gradually slowing down, but the situation remains critical.

Several roads in Rangchati, Kharnai, and Nazirpur unions in Kalmakanda Upazila are underwater due to heavy rains and landslides. The Panchgao Bazar to Maheshkhola road has been submerged, and communication in the Babukhla area has been cut off due to road damage. Large potholes have also formed in various parts, adding to the difficulty of movement.

Many families have seen their homes, belongings, and livestock washed away by the floodwaters, forcing them to take refuge in the homes of others. Farmers and fish farmers are particularly affected, with their crops and fish stock destroyed by the rising waters.

Kalmakanda Upazila Executive Officer, Shahidul Islam, reported that eight unions in the upazila were flooded after heavy rainfall on Sunday night. He reassured that 50 shelters have been prepared and that sufficient relief supplies are in place. A control room has also been set up to maintain constant communication and support for the affected people, and efforts are being made to repair the damaged roads as quickly as possible.
