After a 17-year gap, the election for the Gopalpur Bazaar Traders Association in Barhatta upazila, Netrokona, was held in a festive and peaceful atmosphere. The business community cast their votes to elect new leadership.
Voting took place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 642 of the 658 eligible votes cast. Sheikh Shahid Morol, the candidate with the fish symbol, won the position of president with 593 votes. Seven votes were deemed invalid, and his opponent, Kamal Talukdar, received 42 votes with the chair symbol.
For the position of vice-president, Md. Shahidul Islam was elected unopposed. The candidate with the wall clock symbol, Altafur Rahman Hanif, secured the general secretary position with 260 votes. Prashanta Pal Tapan was also elected unopposed as the assistant general secretary. The candidate with the sun symbol, Md. Abdul Momen, won the organizational secretary position with 195 votes, and the ceiling fan symbol candidate, Md. Ridoy Mia, won the public relations and publication secretary role with 355 votes.
Additionally, Jahangir Alam was elected as treasurer, Kiran Saha as office secretary, Suman Roy as literature and culture secretary, and Md. Ani Islam as welfare secretary, all without opposition.
Election Commissioner Sheikh Farid Ahmed expressed satisfaction with the fair and impartial election, stating, "We are pleased to see such a peaceful election, with enthusiastic participation from all traders. The elected leaders reflect the traders' aspirations, and we believe they will effectively address the traders' legitimate demands."
