Rajshahi, Jan 11 (V7N) – The early bloom of mango buds in Rajshahi's orchards signals the arrival of spring, bringing both excitement and anxiety to local farmers. While the awakening of mango trees has farmers hopeful for a bountiful harvest, the persistent dense fog is raising fears of potential damage to the delicate buds.
In Charghat and Bagha upazilas, mango growers are seeing early budding in areas like Nimpara, Bhayalakshipur, Charghat Sadar, Sarada, Shalua, Monigram, Bausa, and Gargaria. Farmers are thrilled with the early signs of fruiting but remain cautious about the damaging effects of fog.
Bahadur Rahman, a mango farmer from Kaluhati village in Nimpara Union, shared, "My 7-bigha mango orchard hasn’t budded for the past two years, and I had to cut down many trees. This year, early budding has brought me hope. But I’m worried that the fog might harm the buds."
Similarly, Shamsul Haque, a mango farmer and trader from Bhayalakshipur Union, noted, "Some trees have started to bud, and within 10 days, the entire garden will bloom. We’re clearing weeds and spraying pesticides to protect the buds and ensure healthy growth."
Despite farmers' concerns, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) assures that the risk of bud damage is minimal. According to the DAE, when the sun emerges after fog, the buds typically recover and remain healthy.
Charghat Upazila Agriculture Officer Al Mamun stated, "This is the ideal time for local mango varieties like Lakshnabhog to bud. Farmers are being advised to use fungicides and take proper garden care to protect the buds. We are optimistic about achieving a good harvest this year."
17,900 hectares of mango orchards in Rajshahi district.
70% of cultivation is concentrated in Bagha and Charghat upazilas.
Charghat alone has 4,903 hectares of mango gardens.
With proper care and favorable weather, farmers remain hopeful for a rich mango yield this season. The Agricultural Department continues to provide guidance to safeguard the budding fruits and ensure a prosperous harvest.
