Rajshahi, Jan 28 (V7N) — No trains have departed from Rajshahi Railway Station since Monday midnight due to a strike by the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Welfare Workers Union. The sudden halt in train services has left passengers stranded, sparking outrage and leading to vandalism at the station.
Trains such as the Chilahati-bound Titumir Express (6:20 am), Khulna-bound Sagardari Express (6:30 am), Dhaka-bound Banalata Express (7:00 am), and Dhaka-bound Silk City (7:40 am) were cancelled on Tuesday. Many passengers, unaware of the strike, arrived at the station only to find their journeys disrupted. Frustrated, they vandalised station property, including chairs, and physically assaulted two staff members.
Angry passengers criticised the railway authorities for cancelling services without prior notice despite selling tickets. "We’ve faced extreme suffering because of their negligence," one passenger said. Many demanded accountability and punishment for the responsible authorities.
Rajshahi Railway Station Manager Moen Uddin reported that the situation was brought under control after the army and additional police were deployed. "The passengers calmed down and left after receiving refunds for their tickets," he stated.
The strike, which has disrupted train services nationwide, continues to cause significant inconvenience, with no immediate resolution in sight.
