Barguna, Apr 25 (V7N)- An exceptionally large hilsa fish, weighing approximately 2.5 kg, fetched a staggering price of Tk 12,000 at auction in Patharghata, Barguna. The fish was caught in a fishing net in the Baleshwar River near the Sagar Estuary.
On Friday (April 25th), at Patharghata, the country's second-largest fish landing center, the 2 kg 440 gram hilsa was auctioned off for Tk 11,900, with a starting bid of Tk 195,000.
Fishermen reported that they ventured out fishing during high tide in the early hours of Friday. It was then that one fisherman's net yielded the massive hilsa. The fish was subsequently brought to the fish landing center for sale on the same day.
The prized hilsa was sold at Mustafa Alam's Fishing and Merchant Shop, located in the Patharghata BFDC Market.
Patharghata Fisheries Officer Hasibul Haque commented on the ongoing 58-day government ban on deep-sea fishing, implemented to aid fish reproduction and growth. He emphasized that adhering to this ban would contribute to an increase in fish populations in both the sea and rivers.
