Ishwardi, Pabna, Apr 27 (V7N) - Three Union Parishad (UP) members and an Awami League (AL) leader were detained by local residents at the Dashuria Union Parishad office in Ishwardi, Pabna, on Sunday and subsequently handed over to the police.
The incident occurred around 2 pm local time. According to local resident Asadul Islam, the three UP members – Firoz Hossain Baki (57), Alauddin Khan (50), and Rafiqul Islam Majhi (45) – arrived at the Parishad office after a prolonged absence. All three are reportedly involved in Awami League politics.
Upon learning of their presence, local residents gathered at the UP office, detained the three individuals, and notified the police. Law enforcement arrived at the scene around 2 pm and took them into custody.
Firoz Hossain Baki is identified as the UP member of Ward No. 2 of Dashuria Union Parishad and holds the position of senior joint general secretary of Dashuria Union Awami League. Alauddin Khan is the UP member for Ward No. 6 and serves as the 2nd organizing secretary of the same Awami League unit. Rafiqul Islam Majhi represents Ward No. 5 and is a member of Ward No. 5 Jubo League.
Sulav Malitha, the president of the Dashuriya Union BNP, alleged that these three UP members, along with other Awami League leaders and activists, had previously filed false cases against BNP members and activists during the tenure of the current government. He further claimed they had exploited their positions for financial gain by promising protection from these cases and had harassed ordinary citizens. Upon hearing of their arrival at the Union Parishad, locals took action to detain them and inform the police.
Shahidul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, confirmed that the three UP members were detained by locals at the union office. He stated that the police rescued them and brought them to the police station, adding that an investigation would be conducted to determine if there are any existing cases or complaints against them, and legal action would be taken accordingly.
Abdullah Al Mamun, son of UP member Firoz Hossain Baki, countered that local BNP leaders and activists had filed cases against the three UP members due to their affiliation with the Awami League. He asserted that all three are currently out on bail and had visited the union council to carry out their duties when they were allegedly humiliated and handed over to the police by BNP members and activists.
