Ramu,Feb 18 (V7N) — Police have arrested one person with 150,000 pieces of Yaba tablets in a special anti-drug operation in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.
The arrested was identified as Md. Harun (29), a resident of the Purba Dariyardighi area under Khuniapalong union. Another individual, Shahidul Islam, is reported to be from Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar, police sources said.
According to a press release issued by Cox’s Bazar District Police on Wednesday morning, the operation was conducted on Tuesday following secret information about a large consignment of Yaba being smuggled via Morchiya towards Ramu along the Cox’s Bazar–Chattogram highway using an unmarked pickup (dump truck).
Acting on the tip-off, police set up a temporary check post on the Morchiya–Ramu paved road on the south side of Shikolghata Bridge under Ramu Police Station at around 7:30 am and began searching vehicles.
At approximately 9:15 am, an unmarked pickup truck heading towards the Ramu bypass attempted to cross the check post. Police signaled the vehicle to stop, but the driver ignored the signal, broke the barrier and tried to flee the scene.
Police then chased the vehicle and eventually intercepted it in front of Ramu Central Government Primary School in Fatekharkul union. During the interception, several suspects attempted to escape, but police managed to detain Md. Harun, who was carrying a white sack.
In the presence of witnesses, the recovered sack was searched and 15 packets were found inside, each containing 10,000 Yaba tablets. A total of 150,000 Yaba pills were seized. The unregistered pickup truck used for transporting the drugs was also confiscated from the scene.
Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Bhuiyan of Ramu Police Station confirmed the incident and said that a case has been filed under the relevant laws.
