Rangamati, July 02 (V7N)- Due to heavy rainfall causing an increase in water levels in the Kachalong River from India, at least 2,000 families in Baghaichhari Upazila of Rangamati have been affected by flooding. According to local sources, approximately 4,000 people across 20 villages in Baghaichhari Upazila are affected by the flooding.

"There is a possibility of landslides due to the heavy rains on the hills, while the increase in water levels of the Kachalong River has created a flood situation, causing distress to the people of Baghaichhari Upazila," said Shirin Akhtar, the executive officer of Baghaichhari Upazila administration.

She mentioned that necessary arrangements have been made for the affected families in the upazila. Due to the heavy rainfall, the foothills have been submerged, affecting nearly two thousand families. 55 shelters have been opened in the upazila. Additionally, the road to Baghaichhari has been submerged in water, trapping tourists in Sajek, and it is not possible for anyone to leave until the water recedes, according to the UNO.

Furthermore, due to the rise in water from Ujan, communication has been cut off between the Baner river and Sajek. As a result, several hundred tourists are stranded in Sajek. Tourists cannot leave Sajek until the water recedes.

Matijay Tripura, editor of the Sajek Cottage Owners' Association, said, "All those who came in cars on Monday are staying in Sajek. It doesn't seem possible to operate cars even on Tuesday due to the rising water. No cars will be able to enter Sajek from Khagrachhari in the morning. Those who are there will not have to pay rent for any room. They just have to pay for water.
