Jamalpur, July 9 (V7N)- The flood situation in Jamalpur has improved as the water level of the Jamuna River has significantly decreased. However, many areas remain submerged, and residents continue to face severe challenges.

Rafiqul Islam, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board's local office, reported that in the 24 hours leading up to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the water level at Bahadurabad Ghat in Dewanganj dropped by 17 cm, remaining 61 cm above the danger level. The water level at Jagannathganj Ghat in Sarishabari decreased by 11 cm, still 103 cm above the danger mark.

Despite the reduction in water levels, around 300,000 people in Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, Islampur, Melandah, Madarganj, and Sarishabari upazilas remain stranded. The flood has affected 19 community clinics and 259 primary and 88 secondary schools, halting their activities.

Jamalpur Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Zakia Sultana noted that about 8,000 hectares of cropland, including Aush, Ropa-Aman seedbeds, jute, chilli, corn, sesame, and various vegetables, have been submerged.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Alamgir Hossain reported that thousands of families have taken refuge in 15 shelters. The submerged local and regional roads are causing transportation difficulties. A severe food and drinking water crisis has emerged, prompting the allocation of 1,100 tons of rice, Tk22 lakh, and over 4,500 packets of dry food for the flood victims.
