Duragapur, July 18 (V7N) – Sheikh Shahinur, a Jubo League leader, and several others were injured in an attack by a rival group during a rally at the GBC Christian Trust gate on the Birishiri side of the Sumeshwari Bridge on Wednesday (July 17) evening.

Voice Seven's on-site investigation revealed that from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the leaders and activists of the Kolmakanda Upazila Awami League organized a protest rally with thousands of people, claiming BNP-Jamaat involvement in the recent quota movement in Kolmakanda. After the rally, Kolmakanda leaders and activists headed towards Duragapur on a motorcycle showdown, reaching Duragapur.

As the showdown reached the Duragapur Police Mor area, police stopped them from proceeding further. At that moment, news came that around 40-50 people armed with sticks, machetes, and other local weapons were preparing for an attack at the Birishiri part of the Sumeshwari Bridge.

Amid a heated exchange between the police and the showdown participants, 10-15 motorcycles crossed the Sumeshwari Bridge and reached the Birishiri area. As soon as they arrived, the attackers launched a sudden assault. The leaders and activists, who traveled from Kolmakanda to Duragapur in support of Kolmakanda-Duragapur MP Mostaq Ahmed Ruhi, faced an attack from the supporters of Duragapur Upazila Chairman Saddam Akunji.

The injured received initial treatment at Kolmakanda Upazila Health Complex, with Sheikh Shahinur remaining under treatment for severe injuries.

The situation in Duragapur remains tense following the attack. However, various law enforcement units are deployed to maintain control. Duragapur Circle Additional Superintendent of Police informed Voice Seven at around 11:15 PM on Wednesday night that no complaints had been filed regarding the attack yet. Nevertheless, the upazila administration and various law enforcement units are actively working to keep the situation under control.
