An army vehicle was set on fire by a mob after a clash broke out between members of the army and supporters of the Awami League.
The incident has resulted in injuries to 15 people, including army personnel, journalists, and locals. Among the injured, two were hit by gunshots.
The incident took place around 4pm on Saturday at the Gopinathpur bus stand in the sadar upazila.
Thousands of Awami League leaders, activists, and locals gathered to protest and block the Dhaka-Khulna highway, demanding the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to the country.
The army personnel intervened and instructed the protesters to clear the road but the crowd began throwing bricks at them. Later, the army personnel used batons to disperse the crowd.
In response, the protesters vandalized the army vehicle and set it ablaze.
Lieutenant Colonel Maksudur Rahman of the Gopalganj camp confirmed the incident, and said around 3,000 to 4,000 people had gathered blocked the road. Four army members were injured in the attack.
Lacchu Sharif, former chairman of Gopinathpur union, said army members opened fire to control the situation. “Two people, including a child, were shot. No one was killed in the incident. The situation in the area calmed down around 6pm.”
