Dhaka, Aug 28 (V7N): The flood conditions in Noakhali have deteriorated further due to persistent rainfall and upstream water flow, prompting many residents to seek shelter. Unfortunately, many remote areas have no available space in these shelters, forcing people to endure waterlogged environments.
The flood situation has worsened in Maizdi and Sadar upazila, with relief efforts failing to adequately reach some of the more isolated areas. The displaced individuals are in urgent need of assistance.
Currently, around 2.13 million people across 87 unions in 8 upazilas are stranded due to the flooding. Approximately 264,743 individuals are sheltered in 1,303 facilities.
Some improvement has been noted in Senbagh, Kabirhat, and Companiganj upazilas over the last 24 hours. However, conditions in Begumganj, Sonamui, and Chatkhil upazilas, as well as in Maizdi and Sadar upazila, remain dire.
Arjul Islam from the district Meteorological Department reported that 72 millimeters of rain fell from 9 am Tuesday to 9 am Wednesday. A new low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal could lead to additional rainfall in the district within the next day.
Begumganj resident Didar Hossain expressed frustration over the severe suffering in villages, where relief is not reaching due to poor access and lack of coordination between administrative and individual relief efforts.
Iqbal Mahmood, staying at the Kalamunsi High School shelter in Kabirhat, described severe overcrowding, with six families packed into a single small room and no additional space available.
Rana, a resident of Companiganj, mentioned the difficulty of finding rental accommodation in Basurhat market for his family, as their waterlogged home is unsuitable for his heart patient father.
Imran Hossain from Senbagh reported that relief has not yet reached many areas in Beejbagh union, leading to ongoing struggles and hunger among residents.
Volunteers bringing relief supplies from various locations are facing challenges, including assaults and theft of materials due to inadequate administrative oversight.
Deputy Commissioner Dewan Mahbubur Rahman noted the worsening situation and severe food shortages in Noakhali. He appealed for additional support from affluent community members to aid the affected residents.
