Bagerhat, 2 September(v7n)- After a three-month closure, the Sundarbans reopened for tourists and fishermen on September 1. Despite this, the initial turnout was low due to the off-season and ongoing monsoon conditions, according to officials from the forest department.

Md. Azad Kabir, officer-in-charge of the East Sundarbans Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Tourism Center, explained that the tourist season typically runs from November to March, during which they usually see a significant increase in visitors. In the first two days of reopening, only 200 tourists visited, generating 9,200 taka in revenue. However, those who did visit expressed great satisfaction with their experience.

Iman Ali, a tourist from Rajshahi, shared that he enjoyed seeing the diverse wildlife and plants after the prolonged closure. Another visitor, Md. Ashraful from Gomstapur Upazila of Chapainawabganj, was impressed by the natural beauty of the Sundarbans, expressing his delight after visiting with his family.

The forest department had restricted access to the Sundarbans from June 1 to August 31 to protect the breeding season for various species. This period of undisturbed growth has allowed the forest to rejuvenate, benefiting the 319 species of fish, 334 species of plants, and 105 species of wild animals and birds that inhabit the area.
